In recent years, Bangladesh has witnessed a significant rise in hidden camera scandals, particularly among young couples. The proliferation of social media and the widespread use of smartphones have made it easier for individuals to record and share private moments without consent. This paper aims to provide an overview of the Bangladeshi young couple hidden cam scandal, its implications on online privacy and security, and the measures being taken to address this issue.
The Bangladeshi government has taken steps to address the issue of hidden cam scandals. In 2020, the government passed the "Information and Communication Technology (Amendment) Act," which makes the recording and sharing of private moments without consent a punishable offense. The law provides for imprisonment of up to 14 years and a fine of up to BDT 1 million (approximately USD 12,000).
According to a report by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), over 500 cases of hidden cam scandals were reported in 2020 alone. The actual number of incidents is likely much higher, as many cases go unreported due to social stigma and fear of reprisal. A survey conducted by a local NGO found that 1 in 5 young adults in Bangladesh have experienced some form of online harassment, including hidden cam scandals.
